Mr. Blackie had recently opened Haney Honda at the corner of what is now 207th Street and Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. The dealership was located on a ¼ acre lot, and featured a one car showroom, and two service bays with one technician to tend to both. Marv Jones was offered a management contract with an option to purchase in September 1973. Teaming up with his father Ted, Marv Jones purchased the dealership from Mr. Blackie in October 1973.

Upon taking over the dealership, Marv Jones was a jack-of-all-trades, doing everything from managing the lot and washing cars, to answering phones and acting as a Sales Consultant, Sales Manager and Dealer Principal. That November, Marv wrote Honda of America asking if they had planned on moving into Canada. He let them know he was interested in running a dealership for Honda, which would serve Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and surrounding areas. In September 1974, Marv Jones Honda opened, the first established Honda dealership west of Ontario.

Selling one car the entire opening weekend, Marv was uneasy about his decision to take on the franchise. Thinking back, Marv remembers the display: 15 civics, hatchbacks open, balloons and all, yet no customers. Then the 1975 oil crisis hit North America, and Marv’s fuel efficient lineup began flying off the lot. Eventually the intersection got a traffic light and motorists were able to see the lot, furthering business. The team at Marv Jones Honda has grown from 3 members in 1973 to over 100, with Marv’s son Ryan taking lead as General Manager. Meanwhile Marv now gets to enjoy time with his friends and family, in the garden, and out on the golf course.
