The 2020 Honda Civic: Family Comfort with Performance Appeal
Throughout its long history, the Honda Civic has been one of the most popular cars in the Canadian market. Offering an attractive mix of family-friendly design, sporty looks, and reliable performance, it manages to combine wide appeal with great value. There are three basic types of Civic on the market: the sedan, hatchback, and coupe. For this look at what the 2020 Honda Civic offers, we'll concentrate on the most popular sedan and hatchback versions.
2020 Honda Civic Powertrain and Performance
The base trims of the Civic sedan are equipped with a 2.0L, 16-valve, 4 cylinder engine providing a
respectable 158 horsepower, plenty enough for regular driving under normal conditions. However, move up the trim levels and the engine becomes a much more exciting 1.5L turbocharged model, pushing out between 174hp and 205hp depending on the trim's drive-train configuration. This naturally makes for a much more responsive drive.
The hatchback version comes with the same turbocharged engine as standard, although the maximum
output is a slightly less meaty 180hp.
All trims of the hatchback feature a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive as standard,
with CVT as an option throughout.
The transmission options of the sedan are a little more complex, with the top and bottom trims restricted to six-speed manual, and the mid-range trims offering CVT only. As with the hatchback, all trim levels are equipped with front-wheel drive.
For both sedan and hatchback, the fuel economy of the CVT models is attractive. The hatchback can go as low as 6.9L / 100km for the combined rating, with the sedan slightly higher at 7.9L / 100km.
However, across both body styles the combined ratings are a little thirstier, at 8L / 100km (sedan) and
7.2L / 100km (hatchback). Nevertheless, whichever option you chose, the Civic won't cost you a fortune
As a car that's aimed at least partly toward family driving, safety features are a strong point of the Civic
across all versions. Active safety systems include:
- Forward collision warning with collision braking mitigation system.
- Lane departure warnings.
- Road departure warnings and mitigation.
- Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.
- Vehicle stability assist with automatic traction control.
All this is backed up with a full suite of air bags for driver, passenger, and rear seats.
All models in the Civic lineup are well equipped on the interior technology front, which is another factor
that makes the car attractive to families. Along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, there's a powerful
multi-speaker audio system with speed-sensitive volume control, colour LCD display, multiple USB
ports, and Wi-Fi tethering.
